Shifrah and Puah Maternity Center

Support our efforts in helping the Shifrah and Puah Maternity Center, serving the women of the Abayudaya communities and all of the neighboring villages with a diverse clientele and staff of Christians, Muslims, and Jews

The Shifrah and Puah Maternity Center was founded in July 2018 due to the efforts of an Israeli nurse-midwife, Ilana Shemesh, who volunteered in Uganda and was motivated to help improve the maternal and infant mortality and morbidity statistics.

Coming from Israel, she connected with the small remote Ugandan Jewish community there and was assisted by the local Rabbi and doctor and given the challenge of raising funds and creating a safe and dignified place to birth within the existing structure of the health center.  After a year of fundraising, she returned to Uganda to make her dream a reality.  The center serves the women of the third largest city in Uganda, Mbale, and all the neighboring villages, and has a multi-denominational clientele and staff of Christians, Muslims, and Jews.

The maternity center provides prenatal, birth, and post-partum services, contraception, and vaccinations and prevents and treats pregnancy complications as well as Malaria, HIV, Typhoid fever, etc.  In order to prevent infant and maternal death and give babies the best possible chance to live we must encourage women to birth in the Birth Center. Our maternity center provides the available medical supervision and equipment for a safe birth, instead of birthing unassisted in unhygienic poverty conditions.

The maternity center aims to provide all women with safe, humane, and dignified childbirth, regardless of wealth, race, or religion.

They strive to impact the safety of birth by enabling a clean and hygienic birth space with caring but qualified and experienced midwives providing proper pregnancy follow-up and access to modern equipment, in this way, improving the birth statistics for Uganda.
