Source Sheet for the International Day of Education

As we celebrate the International Day of Education, we will be reminded of the profound role that education plays in shaping both individuals and communities. The day offers an important opportunity to reflect on the deep wisdom embedded in Jewish tradition regarding the value and purpose of education.

The Torah teaches us, "And you shall rehearse them to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house and when you go on the way and when you lie down and when you rise" (Deut. 6:7), emphasizing the importance of constant learning and guidance. Education is not merely about imparting knowledge; it is about shaping character, values, and a life of purpose. This process is both a sacred duty and a lifelong journey, as we strive to cultivate individuals who will contribute meaningfully to the world.

As we consider the essence of education, we look to Jewish teachings that call for a holistic approach. Education is not just a command or a habit but a transformative process that shapes the heart and soul. As the Piaseczno Rebbe, Kalonimus Kalman Shapira, writes, true education goes beyond simple instruction—it forms the foundation for a person to live a life aligned with the ways of God and the values of justice and goodness.

In today’s world, where challenges and opportunities for meaningful engagement are plentiful, we must also consider how to educate for independent, original thinking while encouraging a commitment to “tikkun olam” (repairing the world) and service to the greater community. As Proverbs 22:6 teaches, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This timeless wisdom reminds us that education is a long-term investment in a person’s character and purpose.

On this International Day of Education, let us dedicate this special day of learning in hope of better days and the release of the hostages. May our reflections and commitment to education inspire a brighter future for all.

We are proud to share with you below a source sheet in different languages to use on International Day of Education. In a world where education is more vital than ever, we are honored to provide these tools to promote learning and connection.

It is our hope that by sharing these resources, we can inspire and contribute to a world illuminated by knowledge and understanding.
