Hazzan Mike Stein

Hazzan Mike Stein has been the cantor at Temple Aliyah in Los Angeles, Calif., for 21 years. He is the recipient of the coveted Samuel Rosenbaum award for Scholarship and Creativity from the Cantors Assembly. Recipient of the Hiddur Mitzvah Award from Masorti Olami, Mike works extensively with Jewish communities in Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Poland. Activities include educator, cantor, and community organizer. He creates programs for prayer and community leaders. Notably, he has helped create a "nusach" project which encourages each community to create their own style of musical prayer. These projects promote inclusion in world Jewry while highlighting the unique cultural aspect of each kehilla.

 

Hazzan Stein came to this point in his journey through a "long and winding road." His career spans from being in the original Broadway cast of JC Superstar, to playing fiddle for four presidents as a member of The United States Navy Band, to being nominated for a Grammy award in Children's music and a solo artist with Pete Seeger and Sweet Honey in the Rock on the Grammy winning CD "cELLAbration," and being on Season 7 of the "Voice." He has appeared on the Grand Ol' Opry, and the Nashville Now show many times. He is a winner of four WAMMY awards (Wash. DC music awards), a Parents Choice Award, and a National Library Association award for children's music. You can hear him play violin on recordings for Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eva Cassidy, Tom Paxton, and Craig Taubman. Mike’s patriotic song "We Are With You" is part of the "Greatest American Songbook" (Hal Leonard). He has produced albums for Theodore Bikel z" l, the Abayudaya, and the Lemba Jews of Zimbabwe. He sits on the board of the Interfaith Solidarity Network and the Afro-Jewish Alliance. He created shows for Jewish Life TV called "Shabbat With The Steins!" and "Miracle Shabbat!" Hazzan Stein has a choir for nuero-diverse youth and adults called "Kolot Tikvah," and works with the Miracle Project creating artistic programs for the differently-abled.

 

Mike has been married to his wife Kelley for 43 years, and has three sons, and four grandchildren. He has a musically talented family, calling themselves "The Rolling Steins."
