Gillian Caplin, the new president of Masorti Olami, was fortunate to be able to visit Chile and Brazil earlier this month. Gillian met with rabbis, lay leaders, and representatives of the various youth movements of the Masorti communities in Chile. Board members came especially to see her from Uruguay and Argentina.
Within two days, and with an extremely full agenda, she managed to fit in nine meetings and meet with more than sixty people. Also, Gillian was interviewed by two prominent community newspapers.
She then traveled to Sao Paolo, Brazil where she met up with Alan Silberman, the immediate past president of Masorti Olami. Special representatives also came from Porto Alegre, Campinhas, and Curitiba, especially to meet with Gillian and Alan. These meetings were extremely successful. She then went onto Rio de Janeiro to visit Rabbi Nilton Bonder from the Congregacao Judaica do Brazil. Rabbi Bonder organized a Kabbalat Shabbat service in Gillian’s honor. Hundreds of congregants came to meet her. Masorti Olami feels extremely honored to have such wonderful leaders in the Masorti communities in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and all over Latin America.
