Dor Hadash is an independent, egalitarian community founded in 2007 in Budapest by a new generation of Hungarian Jews. We seek to build a community and personal identity in a new and positive way, one that is not based on fear, conformity and obligation but on spirituality, philosophy, communal values, tolerance and acceptance. We acknowledge that our approach is only one of the authentic streams of religious Judaism, and therefore we respect and seek cooperation with other streams of Judaism.
We are committed to prayers that are meaningful and refreshing to Jews from diverse religious backgrounds. Our services use the Masorti liturgy in a halachic framework and incorporate communal participation, inspiring and thoughtful Torah studies and alternative Jewish cultural programmes. They often merge davening with literature, theatre, music and other forms of art in order to engage members in a new way.
We are a progressive community open to Jews from all backgrounds, secular and observant, affiliated and unaffiliated alike, as well as to non-Jews. Jews from mixed families, whose halachic status is uncertain, are also welcome in our community and, when appropriate, we strongly encourage and help their conversion through the European Masorti Bet Din. We also promote interfaith dialogue. We are committed to allowing everyone – new and old members, visitors and regulars alike – to feel at home and empowered to embrace a creative approach and a fulfilling Jewish experience.
