Judy Horowitz is World Council/Masorti Olami’s alternate delegate to the United Nation’s Department of Public Information NGO forum. She wrote the following report after visiting the UN on September 23, 2009 to hear Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech.

The United Nations was founded nearly 62 years ago after the carnage of World War II and the horrors of the Holocaust. It was charged with preventing the recurrence of such horrendous events.

Each September the leaders of the world are allowed to enter the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Leaders of the free world and demons of the oppressed are given the podium. It does not matter whether they are chosen or they have forced themselves upon their constituencies.

On Wednesday September 23, 2009, a demon was given the platform. The President of Iran stood at the podium spewing his latest anti-semitic rants. He again claimed that the Holocaust is a lie and made a mockery of the UN Charter.

The next day thousands of people, Jews, Christians and Muslims demonstrated outside of the United Nations against the presence of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  They stood together for freedom and truth.

Inside the United Nations the halls were graced with the presence of the leader of the only Democracy in the Middle East.  His Excellency BENYAMIN NETANYAHU, PRIME MINISTER OF ISRAEL.  From the great podium Mr. NETANYAHU said that, “Israel wants peace and we expect the other side (the Palestinians) to make peace with the Jewish State of Israel. All we ask is that the Palestinians recognize and say yes to the Jewish State.”  He asked those present to stand with Israel and not with the terrorists.  He went on to say that Israel has made many painful compromises and concessions and Israel is willing to recognize a Palestinian State.  He continued, “The Palestinians should have power to govern themselves and Israel is willing to live together in peace, prosperity and dignity.  This peace will come from good will and hard work.”

That evening Elie Wiesel, the greatest witness of the Holocaust, introduced Prime Minister Netanyahu to a packed auditorium at the 92nd Street Y in New York City.   The auditorium was filled with leaders of the Jewish World.  When Netanyahu spoke, The Prime Minister praised Elie Weisel saying, “you do not let them lie”  Netanyahu told of visiting the Libovitch Rebbi in Brooklyn many years ago. The Rebbi predicted that he would go into a house of lies where in the dark hall he would light a candle, which would be seen by everyone.  He told him that he must dispel the LIES. Prime Minister Netanyahu went on to say that at the UN the following three lies are heard,

  1. The Holocaust did not occur. …  (His response)    The very being of the UN attest to the fact that it did happen.
  2. Israel has been the aggressor in the conflict …(his response) Israel has never been the aggressor. When the UN Declared a Jewish Homeland at same time the Palestinians were offered land for as Palestinian State, they refused. Ever since then they have tried to destroy this Jewish State and Israel has made many many concessions.  It is the Palestinians who still seek to wipe the State of Israel off the map.
  3. We are foreign colonists in Israel. ….. (His response) This is the land of our forefathers. Netanyahu told of having a ring that was found recently by archaeologist in Israel it dates back 2000 years and has the name Netanyahu on it. It is mounted and framed in my office. It proves that this is our land.

In closing Netanyahu asked that on these days of personal accounting, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we should all light an extra candle for truth and justice for the Jewish state.
