The beautifully restored Rumbach Street Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary—originally built in 1872—was the venue for this year's European Rabbinical Assembly Kallah (gathering), which took place May 11–14.
Hosted by Rabbi Peter Radvanszki, 20 rabbis from Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Sweden, Israel, USA, and the UK came together for days of learning, prayer, and meaningful conversation—strengthening bonds and building bridges across borders.
The Kallah, themed around Democracy and featuring meaningful tefillah, learning and dialogue on current and thought-provoking issues, was a vibrant celebration of the diversity, spirit, and shared mission of the Masorti movement in Europe—a reminder that even in challenging times, our communities continue to grow in strength and unity. Masorti and MERCAZ Olami Executive Director Rabbi Mauricio Balter led a study session on Israel's Declaration of Independence, MERCAZ Olami, and this year's elections for the World Zionist Congress.
One of the highlights of the four-day gathering was the election of Rabbi Peter Radvanszki from Budapest as the new President of the European Rabbinical Assembly.
Masorti Olami was proud to help sponsor the gala dinner held with the esteemed presence of the Israeli Ambassador to Hungary, Maya Kadosh, and Peter Nogradi, Vice President of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities, Mazsihisz. The event, which was also attended by representatives and rabbis from the Neolog movement, provided an important opportunity for dialogue and exchange between Masorti/Conservative rabbis and Neological leaders.
Rabbi Balter shared: "It was a pleasure to see the rabbis interacting with one another in an atmosphere of friendship, mutual respect, and collaboration, with the shared sense that they are fulfilling a sacred mission in service of the Jewish people and Masorti Judaism. These encounters strengthen the bonds between communities and remind us of the vital role of shared rabbinic leadership in building a strong, connected Jewish future."
Kol Hakavod to the Rabbi Idit Lev, Rabbinical Assembly’s Global Engagement Associate, and our dedicated European rabbis for organizing and participating in such an important event, and for their ongoing commitment to a thriving future for Masorti/Conservative Judaism.
